Description

The foundations of gifted education in the United States were laid in the 1930s by psychologist Leta Hollingworth at the experimental Speyer School for rapid learners in New York City. Dr. Hollingworth taught and studied this unique population of children and came to believe that they had special educational needs that could not be adequately met in a typical classroom setting.   Motivated by this strongly held belief, she created a set of  best practices for designing curriculum and meeting the educational and emotional needs of those children.

The program was conducted 1935-1940, the first for gifted students in the United States. The  original Speyer school closed in the spring of 1941 and the students scattered across the city's district. Some forty years later, Willard White located 28 of the Speyer School alumni for a follow-up study and organized a reunion. This long-awaited book is the result of his important study of the students who were in Leta Hollingworth's program, which he also describes in detail, together with copies of articles that appeared about it in the media at the time.
